What is the Bishop Score?
The Bishop Score, also known as the cervical score, is a system used to assess the readiness of the cervix for induction of labor. It helps predict the likelihood of successful vaginal delivery after induction.
Original Bishop Score Scoring System:
- Dilation (cm):
- 0 cm: 0 points
- 1-2 cm: 1 point
- 3-4 cm: 2 points
- 5+ cm: 3 points
- Effacement (%):
- 0-30%: 0 points
- 40-50%: 1 point
- 60-70%: 2 points
- 80+%: 3 points
- Station (cm): (Refers to the position of the baby's head relative to the ischial spines)
- -3: 0 points
- -2: 1 point
- -1, 0: 2 points
- +1, +2: 3 points
- Cervical Consistency:
- Firm: 0 points
- Medium: 1 point
- Soft: 2 points
- Cervical Position:
- Posterior: 0 points
- Midposition: 1 point
- Anterior: 2 points
Modified Bishop Score Scoring System:
The Modified Bishop Score typically excludes Cervical Consistency and Cervical Position. The maximum score is 9.
- Dilation (cm): Same as Original
- Effacement (%): Same as Original
- Station (cm): Same as Original
- Cervical Consistency: Not typically included (0 points)
- Cervical Position: Not typically included (0 points)
Interpretation of Total Score (Original Bishop Score):
- Score 0-5: Unfavorable cervix. Induction of labor is less likely to be successful and may require cervical ripening methods.
- Score 6-8: Favorable cervix. Induction of labor is often successful, especially for first-time mothers.
- Score 9-13: Very favorable cervix. High likelihood of successful induction and vaginal delivery.
Interpretation of Total Score (Modified Bishop Score):
- Score 0-4: Unfavorable cervix. Induction of labor is less likely to be successful.
- Score 5-9: Favorable cervix. Induction of labor is often successful.
